Te Matawhānui | Our Vision

Shaping a treasured space of learning

Our Vision

Our vision is to foster ākonga-centred learning environments where ākonga, communities and mana whenua are connected and enabled to lead learning opportunities in ways that honour the wairua of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

This vision is underpinned by our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.  This means that our work is in partnership with local iwi and whānau, that we work to protect local identity and culture, and that we encourage ongoing participation and engagement with all parties to support quality education provision.

Tārai Kura provides a wonderful opportunity to influence a future-focused marau and curriculum, kura and school environments for all ākonga. We aim to support school boards and communities to think widely about how school property design and use can best support the contexts in which the curriculum is being delivered so that all tamariki mokopuna can be empowered through a focus on language, culture and identity.

It is crucial that the right steps are taken to hear the voices of all those connected to the new build, refurbishment or rebuild, both here today and those yet to come, to ensure the best space is designed to meet their learning needs in local and global contexts.

Measure of success

We will know we have contributed to this opportunity and mahi effectively if, after a transformational process, we see schools and kura (new and existing) that look like, and function as only kura in Aotearoa can: embodying Te Tiriti o Waitangi, reflecting local tikanga and local contexts relevant to all learners.
